July 6- Philadelphia

We visited Philadelphia on Thursday, July 6. The first thing we did once we arrived there was go to the Philly Mint and go through their self-guided tour to see how our coins are made. We had tried to go to the Denver mint a couple of years ago, but they had closed the public tours because of 9-11. Maybe the tours there are open now, but we haven't had the opportunity to check. They didn't have the quarter coin tubes we needed in the gift shop though- we use them to save the state quarters in for the kids. Pictures weren't allowed, of course, so you all will just have to imagine us there. They didn't even have a decent postcard I could buy.

The next stop after running back to the car to get the strollers, camera and bags we couldn't take into the mint, was Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. Boy, has this area changed since the last time we visited. There is a whole new building around the Liberty Bell that wasn't there before (along with scanners, metal detectors and the whole security thing), you can't walk up to Independance Hall without a ticket you've waited hours for (again because of the security thing), and there is a huge visitors center across the street from it all. I don't remember it being so crowded and busy either, but we were there at the end of the day last time so that may have been the reason for that.

After the whirlwind tour of Independance mall, we spent the afternoon at the Philadelphia zoo. The last time we visited here was on our way west moving to CO. Bryce was 3 and Beth and Carissa were 11 months old. It really is a nice zoo, though a bit pricey to get in compared to most. I just love the big fountain/sculpture they have in the front plaza after you go in the main gate. The early evening sun was hitting it just right as we were leaving and there was a rainbow inside it as well.
At the kids' zoo section they have an area dedicated to farm animals and this cow is there to help show where milk comes from. I love the blue sign sitting there that says 'cows are for milking, not riding' and Mark asked Brenna "do you know how to milk a cow?- grab the teats and look at Mama and smile" heehee :)
and the peacocks and peahens were out in force- the males strutting their stuff for the females and protecting their area and the females were out with the chicks.
And finally, a really nice pic of Bryce I had him pose for in one of the pavilions. My baby is getting so big *sniff*
