2014 Layouts–Pt 1

I’ve not been doing nearly as much scrapbooking as in years past. The kids are busy, which means I’m busy, and that usually translates to me being just plain tired at the end of the day. Since I’ve been slacking on the blog posts for so long now,  I thought I would just post the layouts I’ve gotten done this year. It will be a fairly quick way to catch up on the sorts of things we’ve been up to.

CMZoo-ElectricSafari-WinterWalk_12-21-13
journaling: It was a beautiful evening to go see the holiday lights at the zoo’s Electric Safari. It was clear and cold at our house, but when we got to the zoo it was snowing. Big fat, wet flakes made it more cold and the walkways slippery. It also made everything a bit more magical giving everything a blanket of white and the lights some extra glow. We had to stop and warm our bodies at most all of the fire pits they had placed around the zoo. December 21, 2013

Brenna_brokenarm_1-13-14
journaling: It was one of those calls moms don’t want - Brenna is hurt and I think she needs to go to the emergency room. Once I got there and looked at her arm I agreed. I could tell it was broken from the way it was bent. They took us right back when we got to the ER. Once the ordeal of having it set was over Brenna’s positive attitude came back. We watched the Bronco’s playoff game on the TV until the doctor let us go. The next morning we went to see the pediatric orthopedist and he put a cast right over the temporary one they gave her day before. It is purple and has glitters. It’s all this precious girl needed to give her a big smile. Broken arms aren’t much fun, and I’m very proud of how Brenna has handled the whole situation.

VR-CyberWolves_Jan2014-1
journaling: This year’s game is called Aerial Assist, and it is all about working with your alliance team members to pass the ball from one end of the field to a goal at the other. Points are scored for goals, tossing over the truss and catching. It’s a very different sort of game. Our robot design is very different from others that we have seen. The kids of course wanted a robot that could “do it all” and if we get it tweaked right it will be able to. It’s been a quick 4 weeks, but things have gone pretty smoothly & the robot is together and testing well so far. Wiring & programming are the biggest jobs left to go, and we hope to have actual driving and full out testing in these last 2 weeks of build season.

FlavorOfMonth_Feb2014
journaling: It started with sore throats from colds and Josh winning the ‘guess the number of bracelets’ game for robotics club. Hot lemon tea to sooth the achy throats and a non-chocolate dessert as the prize for Josh. I saw a recipe for lemon blueberry cake in my Facebook feed and suggested it to Josh. He, and everyone else, really liked it. I had a couple of lemons left after making the cake and another recipe for lemon bread appeared in my feed, so I made that with blueberries thrown in and lemon bars too. The combination of lemon and blueberry is just the right balance of tart and sweet and reminds us of sunny, warmer days.

journaling: Sarah was so excited to audition for, and get, the part of the tortoise in the second grade musical. She talked about the audition for several weeks before it happened. Once she got the part she studied it and practiced saying her lines and singing the solo. On performance day she did a great job at the dress rehearsal and the evening show for all of the parents. Great finish, Sarah!

November Scrapbook Pages

Definitely a wintery feel to a lot of the pages this month. the photos are all from last year so far, but snow is coming to CO this weekend.

The end of October usually marks the end of our short autumn season. The first snow hit before the leaves had finished falling in 2011.

WinterFrost_12-2-11 journaling: It’s one of my favorite winter events- waking up to finding the world covered with beautiful frost. It lasts a few hours before the temperature rises enough to melt it off. Until then, the world is a winter wonderland!

B&S_Sledding_12-22-11 journaling: Whenever we get a big snow fall, Brenna and Sarah want to go sledding. Yes, they enjoy the sledding most of the time, but their little bodies just don’t last long in the bitter cold that comes along with the snow in Colorado. After walking to the hill we sled on and going down only a handful of times, they are done and ready to head home. I think they enjoy the warm cups of hot chocolate after we get home as much as the thrill of riding a sled down a snowy slope. It’s part of having fun in the winter snow.

Brenna_BallerinaDreams  journaling: The first time Brenna put on a pair of dance shoes, she had found her love. While she enjoys tap and jazz a lot, ballet is her love. She is dreaming of dancing en pointe one day and working hard towards that goal. I see many years of ballet shoes and tutus to come.

Christmas2011_ElvesMakingMe  journaling: Our three elves, Holly, Star and Chris, decided that we weren’t getting the Christmas decorations out fast enough this year so they decided to help. We found them the morning of December 2 in the guest bath putting the finishing touches on the mini porcelain tree. Chris got himself stuck in the box checking to make sure they had found all of the pieces.

November’s tutorials at Michelle Godin’s blog go in a more art journal technique direction. There’s a tutorial on layer blending modes and how to use them to build your own unique ‘art-journaly’ backgrounds for pages and projects. There’s also a bit on how to do custom shape embossing tossed in for good measure ;) I would love to have this tag be real so I could touch and feel it. There are times that I miss playing with real paper still.

October Scrapbook Pages

Melinda_MorningCoffee
journaling: My love affair with coffee started in graduate school. It was needed to help me wake up and focus in the mornings after staying up late in the lab or working on the house. Now I use it to wake up in the mornings after getting the kids off to school. I’ve never been one to drink it black, give me cream and sugar, please. Starbucks lattes are even better, but are a fairly rare treat because of their cost. Pumpkin Spice and Peppermint Mocha are fall and winter favorites that I can drink all year round.

My galleries didn’t really reflect the amount of scrapping I did last month since I ended up working on a lot of projects that I couldn’t show off right away. Now that they’ve been posted in the places they were made for, I can show them off here too.

GrandpaWalt_10-25-12
journaling: This was the last time I saw Grandpa Walt, as he passed away at the age of 93 on October 19. The years of dementia had made it seem like he left mentally a long time ago, but there would still be occasional glimpses of the once sharp mind that he had. Walt could still say a meaningful prayer whenever asked. MommyPat misses him terribly after all of these years of taking care of him, and I hope that she can now find some time to do the things that she enjoys and fill her empty hours. We will have to write letters to her since we do not live close by.  I’m glad I took that weekend to visit with my mother for MommyPat’s 88th birthday and the senior pageant. Goodbye, Grandpa Walt. We will see you in Heaven again someday.

Scrapbookgraphics has started a series of inspiration quote posts in September on Pinterest that I’ve made a few pages for. It’s hard for me to find quotes that speak to me visually, but I’m really pleased with how the ones I’ve done so far have come out.

July Scrapbook Pages

Where did the rest of summer go? I can’t believe the first 2 kids started school this morning. Usually I’m ready for them to go back to school, but not this year.

Melinda_DrWhoFan  journaling: I’ve been watching Doctor Who since middle school in the 1980s, and an avid follower ever since. I don’t always have access to the newest episodes, but I keep up as I can. There’s always something unusual, sometimes creepy, and typically funny. There’s no one quite like The Doctor. Of the 12 Doctors, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, David Tennant and Matt Smith have been my favorites, but I’ve enjoyed them all through the years.

For the speed scrap July 20 at TLP. I did this page in an hour. OK, after I spent about 30 minutes picking through the folders trying to figure out what to use to scrap with ;) I usually spend lots of time fussing with stuff, moving it around, trying different elements, obsessing over journaling, etc.Brenna_FeedingTime_7-4-12  credits: TLP Summer Stories, Amy Martin- A Bit More Mess 2, Darcy Baldwin- Stick It Dates; font: AJF Tweedle Dee, CK Journaling Condensed

So I totally screwed up these cute pictures of Sarah when I took them because I forgot to check what mode my camera was in before snapping away. Manual indoor settings for fluorescent lights do not work well in bright outdoor sun. Lightroom to the rescue! I started playing with some presets I usually hardly look at, and I found one that highlights the greens. Combined with the B&W settings it looks amazing, I think! Sarah wanted help getting into the tree and hanging upside down because she wanted to be a sloth for a few minutes. I have had sets of pictures for years of the girls embellishing the driveway, sidewalk, front porch, back porch… practically any pavement they could find around our house… with the wonderful summer concoction called sidewalk chalk. I never could find the right supplies to scrap them with though. I wanted concrete and I wanted chalk drawings- just like in the photos. I finally bribed my good friend and awesome digi-designer, Kim Jensen, into making me just what I wanted by sending her high-res photos of the various types of concrete and pavements around our house, our sticks of chalk and even a few of my photos for inspiration. It worked! She made me the perfect things to finally scrap these pictures with- thanks, Kim!! You can find Concretely Grounded and Chalk Artist in her shop at The-LilyPad.

I think the Concretely Grounded papers will show up in lots of different pages eventually. One of my favorites is this one with the tire tread marks along the edge. It was perfect for recording the afternoon Bryce spent at the driving range he did at the end of his week of driving school this summer. Bryce_Drivingschool_6-24-12   journaling: Part of the driving school that Bryce attended this summer was going to their driving range on a Sunday afternoon. He learned how to get out a skid, practiced his general driving and parking skills, and learned a bit of the art of driving a manual transmission. He did well at them all.

Brenna_PurpleCons_7-15-12
journaling: Brenna was surprised one July afternoon when I brought home a pair of new tennis shoes for her. Of course they weren’t just any shoes, they were purple and metallic pink Converse. I thought they might be a size too big, but when I find the shoes someone asks for on clearance they just have to come home. It turned out that they were the perfect size too. Brenna loves them!

The new addition to our family last weekend.RAV4_7-28-12 Journaling: We've been looking at cars off and on for several years since our Corolla and Sienna were starting to get up in miles and years. Finally with Bryce getting his driver's permit this summer it was time to seriously consider replacing or adding to the vehicle fleet. After deciding to focus on a replacement more for the passenger vehicle than the van, we settled on the Toyota RAV4. We purchased a 2010 ‘new to us’ Silver RAV. I love the way it drives as it's very similar to my beloved Sienna. It’s not as roomy as we are used to in the passenger area, but has more cargo space. I hope it helps ease the gas bill too.

Brenna_1stTrophy_1-28-12  Journaling: I wish I still had the pictures of Brenna receiving her first dance trophy at the Celebrity dance competition. Whoever stole my camera that Saturday night probably just deleted them. Brenna was so excited to hear her name called. They were told they had to dance down the pink carpet if they received a trophy, and Brenna didn’t hesitate to move and groove down the aisle. It was fun to watch my prim little ballerina loosen up and have some fun. Even though I don’t have the pictures I hoped to, I’m sure Brenna will always remember the thrill of that night.

Remember the page from April with Sarah planting a tree seed? I had my own seed growing story that I had to record. Gee, I wonder where Sarah gets it from? LOL Sadly, I don't have a single one of the tree photos from all of those years. They must be in my grandmother's photographs somewhere though. I wonder if my pecan tree is still growing there?

Melinda_ATreeStory  Journaling: It all begins with a 2-year old me, learning that nuts are seeds and that is where trees come from. I insisted on planting that pecan nut, even though everyone told me it wouldn’t grow because it had been processed for eating. I set the pot on the porch and it just so happened that the gutter leaked and watered it just right. That nut sprouted and started to grow to everyone’s surprise. Eventually the little tree was strong enough to plant in the yard. Every year when we came to visit MommyPat during the summer, I had to have my picture taken next to the tree to record our growth. I was always taller until that very last year before MommyPat sold the house to Aunt Jeannie and Uncle Mike and moved to Pullman.

Sarah_DrSuess_3-2-12  journaling: I loved Dr. Seuss books when I was a kid and learning to read. Go Dog Go, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, The Cat in the Hat, Fox In Socks and any other books that tied your tongue in knots while reading them were my favorites. I would read them over and over until I could read them smoothly. I amaze Brenna and Sarah with how easily I can read them even today. It makes me happy to see my kids learning to read with Dr. Seuss now. Their silliness and nonsense are still engaging to young and old alike. School's help build the sense of fun with celebrations of Dr. Suess' birthday in March. Activities and dress up days make reading fun and exciting. Sarah came home from school proudly sporting her Cat in the Hat hat and she spent at least 30 minutes sitting and reading books to herself from our Dr. Seuss collection.

I did this page for the random challenge at TLP, which was to scrap a photo 3-5 years old. It's not quite 3 years old, but pretty darn close. I've had the bones of this page in my head for a long time- glad to finally get it out of there! DH and the 3 older kids hiked to the top of the largest sand dune while my mom and I kept an eye on the younger kids playing in the sand and water. We tracked their progress with her telescope and my camera. I put layers of the photos I took showing their progress up the dune on top of the base photograph and highlighted them with the times they were taken. It took them about an hour to get to the peak.
