VR-Football-Sept2012  journaling: With 3 kids in the high school band, Friday nights are often filled with the sounds of grunts, cheering, stomping, pep band music and wolf howls now. It’s often cold, and the bleachers are uncomfortable before too long, but it’s fun cheering for the football team and the band. We are VR! Go Wolves!

VR-FIRST2012_3-24-12  journaling: Dean Kamen set out to  bring the excitement of sports events to science, and I would say that he has succeeded. You can feel the emotions of the participants in the air when you walk into the Ritchie Center on FIRST regional weekend. The 2012 game was Rebound Rumble- the robots had to shoot 8 inch diameter foam basketballs into 3 levels of hoops, and cross and balance on bridges. Coopertition was taken to a new level with bonus points being awarded when robots from the 2 alliances balanced on the middle bridge together. The Cyber Wolves performance was a mixed bag this year. Essentially no practice time with the robot before Bag and Tag Day meant that all of the little glitches were found on the field during the actual matches. A third day of competition might have made all the difference in showing off what our robot was actually capable of this year.

June Scrapbook Pages

It’s been a particularly scrappy month- yay!

I figured out a way to paste a background behind the girls studio portrait- love how it turned out!

One of Beth and Carissa’s group tap dances this year was to the Chris Brown song, Yeah 3X. They came on stage in all black outfits and start the dance doing cool hip-hop moves, then they rip off all of the black clothes to reveal their nerdiness underneath- high water pants, mismatched socks, suspenders, bowties and of course black rim glasses. It was a very fun dance choreographed by Amy Gard for the group.

Melinda_NikonD3100_2-24-12  journaling: It stunk when my beloved Nikon D50 was stolen at the end of January. We researched cameras and once again decided to go with a Nikon. It’s been interesting learning to use the D3100- it’s similar to the D50, but not. There are a lot more options and the pictures are twice as big. I’m still figuring things out, but yeah, it was good to upgrade. I really miss that Tamron lens though.

journaling: After the sand and heat of The Great Sand Dunes National Park, the nearby hike to Zapato Falls after lunch was just what we needed to cool off. It was uphill and rocky and the last part was actually walking in the cold mountain stream on slippery rocks. The sound of the waterfall made it almost impossible to speak to each other. It was a refreshing hike.

COSprings_UpInFlames_6-26-1
journaling: It happened in minutes- the winds kicked up and the Waldo Canyon Fire jumped the ridges of Queen’s Canyon and raced down the hill towards the homes on the west side of Colorado Springs. The smoke rolled down the mountainside too and filled the city streets giving everything an eery orange glow and making it hard to breathe. The smoke was even blown all the way across town to our house. We were glued to the live newscasts all evening, watching the fire move down towards the city and start burning houses. Even though our house was in no danger, it still made us stop and think about what we would do, where we would go if the fire came close to our neighborhood.

March & April Scrapbook Pages

Sarah_Playdate_2-29-12  journaling: Sarah and Sophia make quite the pair, conspiring together to arrange playdates while talking on the phone after school. Finally us moms had to agree and they spent two afternoons at each others’ houses having a wonderful time playing hide-and-seek, making pizza for lunch and playing with ponies and Barbies. It’s wonderful to have a friend who lives just down the street.

I started taking a tap class this fall. It's been a challenge in a lot of ways- a good one, but still something I have had to work at. It works muscles of the mind as well as of the body We started learning choreography for a dance (no, we are not performing it at recital :P ), and this is a little motivational piece for myself to keep working at it when I get frustrated with myself. It's an old The Ventures song, No Matter What Shape, which given our varied shapes and sizes and ages in this class we thought it particularly appropriate Melinda_NoMatterYourShape  credits: at scrapbookgraphics.com: Studio Mix #19 - Glorious Visions by The Studio Girls, Tangie's Paperworn Art Styles; tap shoe stamp is my own

E&C-HMSgardening_3-21-12
journaling: We received a last minute email during spring break from Mr. Freark asking for help with a project that would be used to fund robotics and NJHS clubs next year- planting and growing xeriscape friendly flowers for yards. So Elizabeth went to help and we dragged Carissa along too. Brenna, Sarah and I helped a bit later after running some errands. Many hands make light work, and we got all of the seeds planted in just two and a half hours.

journaling: Everything old is new again at some point, and soft serve yogurt is back again. There are lots more flavor and topping choices than when I was a kid, and it is self-serve. You have to be careful about how much you get because it quickly adds up! iTop It is just down the hill from our house. Sarah_KindergartenFun_2-14-  journaling: Kindergarten is Fun ...especially when it is Valentine’s Day and there is a party during the last hour of school. The kids are always excited to have parents and siblings come for a visit in the classroom. They danced and sang their songs they had learned about love for everyone. They had decorated Valentine bags and gave gave each of their classmates one in return. Sarah was so excited to get her own this year and had fun pulling them out one by one and reading them. Some of them even had treats attached. The kids had written special letters to Mrs. Rogers during a week she was gone and when she read each one she had them come up and stand by her so that she could say thank you right then.

Misc July LOs

It’s August 1st, and that means that school starts officially for everyone tomorrow morning. Mom’s ready and not- I’m not ready to have to get up so stinkin’ early 5 days a week, but I’m more than ready for a little bit of ‘separate time’ for Brenna and Sarah. It seems like they have done nothing but fight with each other the whole summer, and I’ve had enough.

I finished up the Dance Quest 2011 Awakening photo book about a week ago, and now I’m just waiting for final approval from the director to release it to everyone. I’m so glad to have that big project almost off of my ‘to do’ list. Here are the last few single pages I’ve done during July. I’m still working on the summer staycation album, but I’m saving those pages for posting together when I’ve gotten a few more done ;)

journaling: It was a hurriedly arranged visit via messages on Facebook, and much too short, but it was good to see Jamie, Brooklyn, Addison and Jonathan again. It had been 3 years since our last visit to Tulsa, so it was nice to get the cousins together for a few hours. We will have to do it again soon!

Misc April- June scrapbook pages

Too many pages I have to do in advance and then can’t post until a particular date. They stack up and I forget about them a lot of the time, especially when it comes to posting here on the old blog. So, here’s a number of pages that I’ve been collecting for a while. ;)

PlayWithMe_1-7-11  journaling: I can feel the anticipation of the day that there are kids playing in Grandma’s new backyard again. There will be lots of laughter and fun once the boxes are all unpacked and the spring weather truly arrives. I know that the tire swing will provide hours of joy, as I remember how much I loved the one in our backyard in Tulsa.

Bryce_CornetRecital_11-21-1
journaling: Bryce had his first cornet recital November 21 at The Springs Community Church. He played well, especially for his first solo performances! Bryce played Ballad in Blue by Robert Girlamo for his solo piece; Mark accompanied him on the piano. His second piece was a duet with his teacher, Greg Arnold. They played Blue Skies by Irving Berlin. November 21, 2010.

Sledding_12-31-10 journaling: It was bitterly cold this last day of 2010, but Sarah still wanted to go sledding. We walked to the back of the school and spent about 20 minutes sliding down the hill before Brenna and Sarah got too cold to enjoy it any more. A mug of hot chocolate helped to warm their insides once we got home.

Brenna_BeALady_2-10-11 journaling: Last spring after the first grade did their musical, Goldilocks and the 3 Bears, Brenna told me that she wanted to have a part next year and not just be in the choir. She didn’t hesitate this year to tell Ms. Champlin when the time came and she was assigned the part of Dot the Ladybug in this year’s musical, Bugz. Not only did she get to sing a solo, but she got to dance too- her favorite 2 things in the world.

A page from our 2006 vacation.CarnegieScienceCenter-Magic journaling: It was an exhibit that fascinated everyone in the family- just how do they do those amazing magic tricks? yep, it’s science... and the art of diversion too. Each of the tricks could be seen from the front as the audience would see it, and then behind the scenes it was explained how it was all done. There was a live show too that demonstrated a few of the common tricks found in that setting.

Sarah&Charlotte_5-26-11 journaling: Charlotte seems like an eighth member of our family some days. Sarah loves to pretend that she is a real baby of her own. She changes clothes, eats, naps, cries, and gets sick and needs medicine. Charlotte likes to go on shopping trips and to see new things. She can often be found sitting in Mama’s purse during those longer trips. It’s fun to see Sarah taking care of her and enjoying this doll from her great-grandmother Patsy.

The flashing lights are like a beacon calling out to everyone to come and spend an hour or two having a good time. My kids are not immune to its siren call and beg to go each time we drive by.
