Dance Quest 2012 – The Dragon and the Pearl

Another year of Dance Quest ballet productions has come and gone. This was our third year participating. I once again worked on costumes and photography for the show, and I also added doing the music editing this year. We were at a different theater this year. It was a little smaller and it had a projection system for the stage backdrop. I really liked the projected images as the backdrops. They really added a lot to the show, I think.

Something that was pretty cool was that I modified the poster image just a bit and it was put on the sheet cake that was eaten at the cast party after the last performance.

The Daughters of Gaia also played Rose’s Friends in the beginning of the show. Brenna was Rose and a Star, Elizabeth and Carissa were Moonbeam Shadows, and Sarah was one of Rose’s Friends and a Daughter of Gaia.

Now I just have to find the time to start tackling the storybook for the show since people keep asking me about that. With all that is going on, it just might be June before I get to it.

Dance Quest 2011 scrapbook pages

I haven’t really posted any  photos from the Dance Quest ballet production this year, mainly as I haven’t even finished the enormous task of processing them all. Ms. Kathryn asked me to do the ticket booth sign again this year, and I decided to make a poster digitally that I could take to the print shop. Ms. Kathryn liked it so much that she said she wanted to put it in a frame and hang it on the wall after the production was over. It certainly made me smile whenever I saw people stopping as they walked down the hall to study it. We had to put it behind the plexiglass of the sign so that we didn’t have to worry about the little kids pointing at things and touching it. I learned quite a bit about using masks in PS/PSE working on this project since I pieced together about 8 different pieces of scrapbook paper to make the background layer and fill for the title lettering.

Dance Quest- Sneak Peek

This year’s Dance Quest production, The Awakening, is almost here! The next week and a half is crowded with dress rehearsals and preparations of all kinds for the performances Saturday and Sunday, March 12 and 13. Here’s a couple of posters and pictures to tease you just a bit.

Dance Quest – Eveland Village

Beth and Carissa as part of the ‘extras’ (meaning they aren’t a member of one of the ballet companies at TDC) for the production were in the third act. Katchka has traveled to Eveland Village and finds herself in the middle of a town celebration. Everyone is out having a grand time visiting and dancing, and Katchka sees someone who looks like her mother. It turns out to be her aunt, her mother’s twin sister, and she has found family once again.

I had hoped to get these pictures scrapped before posting them here, but as it hasn’t happened yet and I don’t know when it will I just decided to go ahead and post them so you can see Beth and Carissa in ‘action’ too. Maybe I’ll get these scrapped during spring break? maybe?

Dance Quest – Fairies of the Web

Brenna, as a member of Petite Ballet, was the big reason that we were involved with Dance Quest for the first time this year; we have attended the shows every year since the twins started dance, but this is the first time that we have danced in it. Since I was paying for/participating in the event already as a member of a ballet company, I told Beth and Carissa that they could try out for the extras this year as well.

Petite Ballet played the role of the Fairies of the Web- the little sprites who are instructed by the Fairy of the Night to spin magical web and give it to Katchka to help her separate the grains in time to save her life. Nearly all of the costumes in the Dance Quest productions are made by Cathie Phillips, a mom whose daughter danced at TDC many years ago and who now dances professionally up in Denver. Even though her daughter no longer dances at our studio, she has continued to be involved in the Dance Quest productions, donating her time and talents to making costumes for the shows so that the kids can sparkle on stage. She made every costume herself that the ensemble kids wore this year. She found a pretty black tulle to make the tutus from that had a rainbow web pattern printed on it, and she made a web design from black sequin strands on the trunk of the leotard. Light up wands and bun covers in the same tulle completed the outfit. Very cute and perfect for their role in the ballet!
(heehee- Brenna told me after I took this photo of her backstage one night that she was pretending to hold a web up, so I had to give her one :) )

We first meet the Fairies of the Web when the Fairy of the Night calls them on stage. Brenna, being the smallest of the group is the last dancer to appear on stage left so she isn’t in the first picture below as she hasn’t come out yet. 

The next time we see them, they are getting instructions to spin the web and give it to Katchka to help her complete the task the Queen of the Forest has given her.

Then, they do their dance spinning the web and putting it in her pocket while she sleeps before the leap across the stage one last time and then disappear  back into the magical forest. The photos on the layout below are from their dance. Dance Quest 2010

It was a busy and wonderful weekend as the performances of the Dance Quest ballet production- “Catch the Wind and Dance” had finally arrived.

Everyone has been working towards this for several months and it was a beautiful culmination of our efforts. I don’t think I ever showed off the ticket booth that I put together using quite a few fairies  and bits from the store at SBG- mainly the wonderful illustrations of Alana McCarthy and Lorie Davison, and a few pieces from Tangie Baxter and Glam Fairy too.

I helped with sewing costumes, selling tickets, working backstage during rehearsals and the Saturday evening performance, as well as being the unofficial photographer (taking pictures is what kept me from having to be on stage with the other adult ladies LOL!). I took pictures at a lot of the rehearsals, as well as during the last dress rehearsal and the Sunday afternoon performance. Here are just a handful of my favorites. I’ll devote seperate posts to specific pictures of my girls as otherwise this post will get to be a mile long. You can see more photos over in this album at facebook, if you are so inclined.
          
I have to say that it is much easier to take photos during dress rehearsal- no audience heads to try and shoot around! I felt sorry for the people behind me as I was constantly moving around trying to get pictures. The kids were passing around several illnesses at the studio over the last couple of weeks, so inevitably there was one or two people missing at each rehearsal or I might have skipped trying to take pictures during the show all together. Everyone was healthy enough this weekend to dance thankfully!
