1.font
2.alphas
3.photos
4.papers
5.arrows
6.staples
7.journaling strips
8.stitches

Battle of the Creative Teams- Weeks 1 and 2

DigiscrapAddicts.com is sponsoring a little contest called Battle of the Creative Teams. Groups of creative team members from digi-designers and stores are competing, and I’m participating with 4 of my friends from Jessica Bolton’s team. Each week we are given a challenge of some sort and we have to coordinate some aspect(s) of our layouts.

Week 1 The challenge was to do a white space layout, and to choose a common color scheme to coordinate all of them. As an extra challenge we could choose a common theme of some sort; we chose ‘favorite something’ as ours. botct-jessiesgirls-week1 and here is my LO a bit closer: BOTCT_wk1-copy2

Journaling lines read:

Week 2 The assignment was to have a musical theme of some sort for the team’s layouts. We chose the song ‘100 Years’ by Five For Fighting, and each chose one of the numbers from the song as the inspiration for our layout. botct-jessiesgirls-week2 Obviously I chose 67. BOTCT_wk2

journaling: I’ve found the saying that time goes faster as you get older to be so very true. It hardly seems possible that my teenage years are well behind me now and I’m in middle-age. I can’t help but wonder what the years ahead will hold and how I will handle them. I hope I can follow the example of all of the ladies in my family who have come before me- coping with grace and dignity at the struggles of life. Finding themselves suddenly alone, starting a career after years at home with children, but still able to enjoy and appreciate life.

what we’ve been up to the last couple of weeks

I’ve been meaning to get my blog updated for the last couple of weeks and just haven’t gotten to it. We’ve been mostly doing the ‘usual’ stuff for this summer- transporting girls back and forth to dance classes, trying to keep up with the grocery shopping, cooking and cleaning up. The kids run around the block to all of their different friends’ houses when we are at home. I took them to see the Hannah Montana movie at the second-run theater on Tuesday last week. Sarah is not my favorite company at movies. Once she was done eating her popcorn she was ready to go, and that was about the time the previews ended and the movie finally started. For the next two hours I had to keep telling her to sit down and be quiet and no, she couldn’t go to the bathroom (she uses it as something to do when she is bored). Maybe if we had chosen to see ‘Monsters vs. Aliens’ instead she would be have been better entertained. If the kids aren’t outside with their friends they are wanting to be on one of the computers or the Wii. Sarah has discovered the lure of the Wii and wants to play too now. She is improving at bowling, getting spares every once in a while., but most other games are still too hard for her though she doesn’t seem to care. I have to remind the older kids that it doesn’t matter how badly she does and to just let her try to do it by herself. Bryce has a really hard time with that as he can’t stand watching other people mess up LOL Mark is out hiking up and down Barr trail several times a week.

I’ve spent a lot of time designing, and most of that work I can’t show off yet since it is either unfinished or part of team collabs that aren’t ready for release. Here’s the main thing I worked on. I’ve been wanting to make a kit to go with the blue background with the stars all over it- that is part of the WWII memorial wall behind the reflecting pool at the monument. I’m quite happy with how the paper that has the Declaration of Independence on it came out, made from a souvenir reproduction I picked up on our vacation last year.

and I did a few layouts somewhere in all of that above!

July5th2008

journaling: Kristen hosted her July 4th potluck again this year. It’s something we all look forward to- getting together to celebrate the 4th, eat lots of good food and enjoy company with friends we might not have seen in a while.

July4th2009

journaling:   The military bases in town invited the public to their July 4th celebrations this year as the city had decided there was not enough money in the budget to hold the traditional celebration in Memorial Park. The Air Force Academy was planning to hold their party on the 4th, but as the weather was predicted to be rainy that evening we chose to attend the one held at Fort Carson on July 3. The Colorado Springs Philharmonic played, fireworks were exploded and all of the usual festival entertainments were present- it was just a different location. To me it doesn’t really matter the exact date or location, but the spirit in which you celebrate the event.

Rusty-WeMissYou

journaling: Things are just too quiet at Grandmama’s house now that you aren’t there, Rusty. We knew you for such a short time. I know there are good reasons for why it was best for you to go to a new home. I think it takes more strength to do what you know is right, even when you don’t like it much, than to just go on. Grandmama is keeping in touch with your new family and making sure that you are adapting well. Maybe we will even get to see you again, though you might not remember us. We will remember you though and cherish the memories of your excitement to see us whenever we came through the door.

This week’s layouts

Not much in the way of layouts for the week. I’ve spent the majority of my time working on a new tutorial for SBG and RAKscraps. What started out as one tutorial has turned into a series of 4 tutorials. There was just so much information that I had to break it up. I think it will work better this way- give people smaller chunks to digest and not be so overwhelmed with it all. I’ve still got some formatting and such to do, so I’m not quite done with them yet.

I had to take a break from the tutorial stuff last night and scrap something. I had just been looking at it too long at that point. I had been wanting to record something the twins did last week during lunch one day- they were having a contest seeing who knew more texting/IM abbreviations. One of them would toss out the abbreviation and the other would have to say what it meant, then she could give another for the first girl. They knew more than I expected since neither of them has a cell phone or even an email account at this point. I guess they hear them on TV shows and from other kids, and they even have a shirt that has a few written on it. The shirt must have been a hand-me-down from our friends the Nortons as I didn’t buy it. LOL

TeenTalk2009

journaling: Beth & Carissa don’t have cell phones, or even an email account yet, but texting abbreviations still creep into their everyday conversations.  One afternoon during lunch they were having a contest to see who knew more of them than the other. I think it ended up being a draw. LOL

And the other page I got done last weekend is a flash back to vacation last summer when we spent a few days with MommyPat and Walt. One day we went to visit the Will Rogers Memorial Museum in Claremore. I really enjoyed the couple of hours we spent there. Will Rogers was an incredible man. His insights into life still very much ring true today. We need more men like him in the world!

WillRogersMuseum_7-24-08

journaling: MommyPat took us to visit the Will Rogers Memorial Museum in Claremore. It was a very interesting couple of hours learning about this man known as “Oklahoma’s Favorite Son.” He lived the American dream- small town boy grows up to be rich and famous. It is the way that he did this that is inspiring- through hard work, honesty and integrity. Those values stuck with him throughout his career and life, making him one of our country's true heroes.

Things that have happened in May

There are a bunch of things that I keep meaning to blog about, but then don’t get around to so I’m just going to start a list and add to it for a while as I think of them.

*Sarah is done with potty training! whoo hoo! She’s gone over two weeks now without an ‘accident’ so I think she has finally gotten it down. She likes to say ‘I do it myself’ when I go to check on her. She’s even stayed dry overnight except for a couple of mornings.

Sarah_BigKidNow_5-13-09

journaling:   Once again it wasn’t quick or easy, but Sarah is finally done with potty-training and wearing her Pony underpants. She likes to tell us that she is a big kid now, and we agree that we don’t have any babies in our house any more. We are very proud of our big girl.

*May 10- It's overcast and threatening to rain, but we took advantage of the clouds to get some of the yard cleanup done that we had been putting off. There is still more to do in the back to do, but I had had enough and stopped after I got the majority of it done. Mark turned the water on to the sprinkler system so we could water tonight and the pipe in the basement bathroom ceiling held for all of three minutes before splitting. So, he has to rip out the ceiling down there again to fix it, and he and the kids are going to take turns getting the lawn watered tonight. Why he just doesn't put out a sprinkler I don't know. Beth and I found one tossed in some of the bushes I was trimming from last year :P  I guess he wants to torture the kids a bit- I get out of helping with that since it is mother's day LOL – update on this: the pipe is fixed and the sprinkler system working, but the hole in the ceiling isn’t fixed. Since he will be out of town for 10 days in a week, I have a feeling this isn’t going to be done right away. It’s a good thing the girls don’t use the shower down there.

*Carissa has officially passed Tap 4 as of May8! Way to go, Carissa!

* Things are wrapping up with both school and dance. This next week is field days  at the elementary school and putting together the twins’ science projects posters. Brenna is counting down the days until she is officially a first-grader. Yes, she will be passing. She worked hard and is doing well. There are things we will need to keep working on over the summer to build up her confidence in herself more, but we can certainly do that. Her teacher said to keep doing whatever it was we have been doing. Yeah Brenna!

*Saturday (yesterday, May 16) started out not so good- stumbled over my own stupid feet and whacked my little toe on my right foot on a chair leg. I'm pretty sure the bone is cracked. I do not have a good history with my toes and ankles, and that seems like that will follow me all of my days <sigh> it isn't too badly swollen but one side is an ugly purple color and it hurts like the dickens. Nothing to do but tape it up and try to stay off of it. My left ankle - the one I strained so badly last January- has been aching off and on lately too for some reason, though I can't think of anything I've done to it lately.

*We went up to Denver yesterday to use our science museum membership one more time before it expires at the end of the month. That was fun, everyone had a good time there even though the special exhibit was pretty crowded because it was the weekend. Then we went to a pizza place for dinner where one kid after the other had a meltdown. We were intending to go to the drag races after dinner, but decided with all of the pouting, fussing and fighting that it wasn't that appealing any more. They really raised the cost for family members who weren't covered by the wrist bands that two of the girls earned so that was a factor too. We have passes to another place - some NASCAR track in Denver - that three of them earned that are good through September, so we promised we would do that another summer weekend. Thankfully they were all OK with that.

and the other layouts that I got done this week.

Bryce_13thbday-ITZ_4-24-09

journaling: We decided to do something different this year for Bryce’s birthday. Since all of the teenagers are into videogames these days, our son included, we took them to the IT’Z Family Fun Center for several hours of unlimited videogames. They earned tickets they could exchange for gifts from the shop. There were fun things for kids of all ages to do, so the whole family had a great time celebrating Bryce’s birthday. April 24, 2009

Picketwire_WalkingWithDinos

journaling: Grandmama took us all to see the dinosaur tracks in Picketwire Canyon. The early morning wakeup and bumpy ride down into the canyon was worth it. It was amazing to see where dinosaurs had walked preserved in the hardened mud. Experiencing history firsthand is one of the best ways to learn it.

Sarah_Bubbles_4-25-09

journaling:  Sarah had been asking for days to blow bubbles. Finally it was warm and dry enough to go out and let her give it a try. She was persistent and didn’t give up, and after nearly half a bottle of bubble solution she was finally able to blow bubbles all by herself.

and a layout for the circle journal project I’ve been working on for a long time. Yes, we are moving really slowly with this project. I’m the only one who is closed to finishing all of the layouts so far. Cassie wanted us to scrap what was outside of our front door- which is of course Pikes Peak for me.

Melinda_MountainMajesty

journaling: I love seeing Pikes Peak from my house and van windows. Each day the view is slightly different- the clouds hanging over it, a weather system approaching from the west, or just the way the sunlight shows off the peaks and valleys of the smaller mountains surrounding it.

I think there were more things I was wanting to write, but I can’t remember what they were and I can’t find the list I made, so I’ll just say goodnight.

Savannah scrapbook pages

I've started the process of scrapbooking all of the photos I took. Here are the first pages I've completed so far.
I think this tree and moss picture has to be one of my absolute favorites. It was really unusual to see the ferns growing on the tree limb like that- I don't remember seeing that anywhere else. This tree was in Forsyth Park.

journaling: One of my favorite sights while walking around Savannah was the many different types of lamps in the parks, on the streets, and perched on houses next to their doors. From the giant lamp in Emmett Park that guided ships in and out of the harbor to the smallest house lamps, each spoke the words ‘welcome home’ to me.

Omniplex Gadget Trees

This was the kids favorite exhibit at the Omniplex in OKCity.
journaling: This was a new exhibit at the Omniplex, built as part of the Oklahoma Centennial Project that teaches kids about how science enriches their every day lives through the use of simple machines such as levers and pulleys and the use of natural products in building materials. Of course the kids think it is all fun and games as they climb, totter, slide, swing, and hoist and throw balls at each other- ours certainly did!

Walt's birthday album and a new LO

I made this album to send to my grandfather Walt for his 90th birthday earlier this month. By a miracle I actually got it put together and mailed in time for it to actually be there for the party. I'm told he enjoyed it ;) and of course being a hybrid album I was able to make a couple of other copies for my mother and for Mark easily. My mom got hers for mother's day and Mark will receive his for father's day next month.
credits: Snapshots 6x4 Eclectic Album and Thrifty Doodled Alpha by Jessica Bolton at scrapbookgraphics; fonts: CK Becky and TXT Stonewashed

I didn't do anything fancy to make the album, it was really very easy. I printed the pages on my photo printer, and then glued them to pieces of 6x4 chipboard with Mod Podge. I'm still learning what the right amount of it is to use- not enough and the prints come off, but too much makes the prints wrinkle and ink run. At least erring on the side of not enough is fairly easy to fix. I actually couldn't find 4x6 pieces of chipboard, but my LSS did have a package of 12x6 chipboard by Westrim, so I just cut each piece into 3 pages for this album on my Carl rotary trimmer. There were 6 sheets in the package and it cost about $4, I think. That was enough to do all three albums I made. Once the pages were glued together, I punches holes using my Crop-o-dile (the Big Bite can go through 3 pieces of chipboard at once- sweet!), added some office rings and then tied on pieces of ribbon.
If you like this album and want to make one of your own, the QP album is for sale in Jessica's store at scrapbookgraphics HERE.

and scrapbookgraphics has a new designer collab coming out tomorrow: Impressions of Fatherhood. It's a lovely mix of guy-type papers and elements. I scrapped this page about Bryce learning to mow Grandmama's yard a few weeks ago. His first summer job ;)
journaling: Bryce has his first summer job- Mark taught him how to mow Grandmama’s yard on May 11, 2008. They went over safety rules and how to properly use a gas powered mower, and then Bryce started on getting the job done. When the front and back yards were done, Bryce was paid for his work. When he mowed the lawn again two weeks later, he also learned to use the weed trimmer.

More projects

It really has been an incredibly busy couple of weeks with the end of the year school projects, trips to fun things the kids earned free tickets to, etc. We are officially done with school projects finally as Bryce got all of his science things turned in yesterday. He had a few more finals today, but I think all of the hard stuff is done after today. It's just fun and games for the last few days for everyone now until the end of the year (which is Friday).

I've done a few things for Prima for the summer CHA show, so I can't show those off for a couple of months now. I do have a couple more new things I can show off now though too.

Jessica Bolton came out with some new Thrifty 'solids' paper packs last week. Boy are they delicious! lots of fun textures- each paper is different- and they coordinate with kits in her shop already so mixing and matching things to go with them is so easy. These are definitely going to be a 'go-to' staple in my stash. Here's a LO I did the other night documenting a few of Sarah's latest habits. She has to have her hair up most of the time, picks out her own clothes (and let's me know if she doesn't like what I pick for her...), calls everything 'cute', and loves to wear Sunday shoes (especially if they have heels) because they make lots of noise when she walks around the house on the wood floor. She calls them her 'tap shoes.'

and for one of my PrimaHybrid projects this month, I found this neat 5x7 cluster frame at Michael's a few weeks ago. We had a whole mish-mash of family photos hanging in the upstairs hallway- different sizes, colors, frames, etc. and it was not looking so pretty any more. So, I made them all more 'uniform' by basically turning them into a mini-album. Except this one hangs on the wall where you can see them all at once. Some flowers are digital, some are 'real', some are under the glass and some are over it. I like going up the stairs much better as seeing this at the top just makes me smile :)

Lots of things still to get done today:
*I need to come up with a graduation card for the son of one of our friends that we met in Germany. It's hard to believe that the little boy I babysat on occasion is 18 and graduating from high school.
*
I've got to have the girls get out their costumes after school today so that I can pin them and start working on getting them altered. I've made phone calls to the moms on my part of the dance class list reminding them that pictures are this week during dance class, so I had better get my own girls ready now.
*I have SOOOO many pictures I need to get off the camera from this weekend and yesterday. Beth and Carissa earned tickets to the Bandimere Speedway night of fire and thunder Saturday night, so we all went up there. I took lots and lots of photos, and I hope some of them are useable. When the cars are going 130+ miles an hour down the track getting a non-blurry picture is a challenge! The fourth grade classes had their annual egg-drop challenge yesterday afternoon, so I need to check those out as well and get copies to the teachers. There are probably other photos on there too I'm not remembering- my camera card is completely filled at the moment!
*We have to go to the library this afternoon. We haven't been the last two weeks because of appointments and conflicts with other things. Luckily our books and videos always renewed, so it wasn't a necessity. But we have to go this week as you can only renew things twice before they have to be turned in.

I'm off to try and get started on some of this list! maybe I'll be back later with some pics ;)
