I can’t believe May is almost over

Oh my, May has gone by in a flurry of school music concerts, dance competitions, rehearsals and photos, finals, graduation celebrations and end of the school year parties! Bryce is set to attend Vista Ridge HS next year now, and he is looking forward to all of the band classes activities that he gets to do. Rookie Marching Band camp is next week, so he won’t have to wait long! We finish up the dance photos tomorrow afternoon, and dance recital is next Saturday. It’s been a long, busy year and I am looking forward to summer when I hope to be able to enjoy a few of those lazy days of the season. We’ve got the 4 girls signed up for a whole slew of dance classes starting mid-June, but they are all on 3 days of the week (instead of the 5-7 days'/week that I’ve been doing this school year) and we will at least have 3 days over the weekend where we can go do fun things without having to work around going to dance. Brenna’s much anticipated, and very belated, birthday tea party is scheduled finally for next Wednesday, and it looks like we will be having Bryce’s belated party on June 11.

I haven’t done nearly as much scrapping as I usually do because I’ve been sick (fighting a very long-lived sinus infection with allergy symptoms on top of it, I think) and there just hasn’t been much energy for scrapping left at the end of the day. But, here are the pages I’ve done in the last few weeks.

journaling:I know you sometimes feel overlooked, Carissa, and I’m sorry for that. You are a wonderful girl that I’m so proud of. you are a happy, positive young woman who is a joy to know. You might have to work a bit harder at the things you share with your twin, but I think that makes your success at them all the sweeter. Having someone to push you to do your very best isn’t all that bad of a thing- if you don’t make it into too much of a competition between the two of you. You will find the activities that you love and are naturally good at- be patient until that happens and keep giving it your all. All I ask is that you do your best, and no matter the end result I will be happy for you. Please don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it though too.    I love you, Carissa!

journaling: I was fairly comfortable in my own skin by my senior year of high school- happy with who I was and less concerned about what others thought of me. I was a music geek and proud of it. I was the Drum Major of the marching band and a member of Treble Triad, active in the Palouse youth orchestra as well as Cornerstone and orchestra at church. Getting good grades was important to me, and it turned out I was Salutatorian at the end of the year. Matt was my boyfriend of 2 years. I called people from many social groups across the school friends, and I’m sure known for the things I wouldn’t do as well as the things I did. They were pretty good years all in all.

I am so very proud of both of you girls! You worked hard on this dance for nearly a year. One of your friends told you that doing a duet is more difficult than a solo, just because you have to work together. This dance stretched you in many ways. You learned some new tap techniques of course, but there was acting and stage presence involved in a big way too. Yes, it showed a bit that this was your first time competing in something other than a group. You did it though and I think you did well. It’s difficult to listen to criticism and then turn around and use that to improve, but you improved your scores between the two competitions to earn a gold medal the second time. I hope you learned something and most of all, just had fun!

I made Ms. Cindy a new bag as part of her gift from the Youth Tap kids and parents. She still uses the one I made for her 2 years ago with the picture of B&C’s Tap 5 class; because it is a bit small she only uses it for special occasions like recital and competitions where she doesn’t have to carry many papers. This new one with the ending post from You’ll Always Find Your Way Back Home  is a bigger zippered denim bag, which of course I blinged up in appropriate dance style ;) The kids from Youth Tap, plus a few others of her students from Tap 3 who wanted to, signed the back of the bag in gold and silver glitter fabric pens. I hope she loves it!

I was looking for something a couple of weeks ago and came across my old CM consultant album, and flipping through it realized that there were quite a few pictures in it that I didn’t have in digital form. So I had a couple of rare hours to myself Saturday afternoon and I sat down and scanned them all. It’s hard to believe my big girls were ever this tiny, isn’t it? And we had a travel theme playday on the SBG blog, so I put together this overview page of our spring break trip to TX at the end of March.
 
Journaling: We packed up our bags again right after getting home from DEA, and left the next morning to drive to Texas to see Grandmama and the Rodeffers for a week. We had fun doing a few touristy things- Longhorn Caverns, the Texas State History Museum, watching indian dances at a pow wow, and eating some wonderful fried catfish and BBQ. We also spent time together swimming in the afternoons, playing family games, and just visiting while the cousins played and enjoyed each other’s company. We also celebrated Brenna’s 7th birthday with lunch swimming and ice cream cake the day before we had to
leave for home. It was a fun and relaxing week!

Where did spring break go?

The end of spring break is practically here. It went by much too fast. After DEA was over, we drove home, washed laundry to pack again, and left to drive to TX to visit with my mom and my sister’s family for the week. After a week in TX we drove home in one very long day. The girls have been back at dance as usual this week even though we haven’t had school. I squeeze in a few doctor’s appointments  since we had more scheduling flexibility too, so I still felt like I was running around all of the time :P It’s back to the normal grind of school days and homework starting on Monday. I’ve posted a few pictures from our week in TX at facebook.

We had to find a patch of bluebonnets to take pictures in during our trip to TX over spring break. I guess we were a couple of weeks too early to catch the huge patches of wildflowers, but what we saw was still pretty!

journaling: Grandmama gave Sarah this little piggy for her fourth birthday. Sarah wasn’t very excited about her at first, but that cute little face can’t help but grow on you and she has finally been fully adopted into Sarah’s large plush family. Sarah picked the name Olivia for her (after the books by Ian Falconer) and she has been the companion picked for many trips of late.

and going back just a bit to vacation in 2008 when we stopped at the Omaha Zoo and the octopus in their aquarium put on a show for us. Usually all you see of an octopus is them hiding in the rocks, but this one was actually swimming around the tank for us.

Bryce has a big project going on in language arts class right now, and since our school has an IB curriculum it involves doing community service. One of the ladies in our church is working on making quilts to send to the mission in Haiti that we help support, so I hooked Bryce up with her for an afternoon of helping work on quilts. This was totally new to him, but he had a good time and learned a few new sewing skills. Now we just have to get the actual written part of the project all done.

journaling: It was an assignment for Language Arts based on the book they were reading “The Pigman” by Paul Zindel- spend 3 hours helping a senior citizen. Joyce Stubbe was looking for help with making quilts to send to Haiti, so Bryce went to help her after school one day. He learned new skills in sewing- cutting, ironing and pinning and had a good time with the Stubbes while doing it.

Since Brenna did her penguin project a couple of weeks ago, I was in a penguin scrapping mood and so I pulled out the pictures of the penguins at the St. Louis zoo from our 2008 summer vacation.

journaling: We made a quick trip to the zoo before meeting Dale just to see the penguin exhibit. It is a beautiful exhibit that is open and lets you see the birds up very close with no glass between you to get in the way. We nicknamed this guy "Mr. Splashy” as he liked to sneak up on people and splash them with the cold, fishy smelling water- it must be funny to penguins!

Beth, Carissa and Brenna are participating in an original ballet production at our dance studio that was written by the studio owner. I was asked to help with decorating the ticket booth and I put this LO together this weekend while trying to put my ideas for the ticket booth down 'on paper.' Now, I just have to figure out how to translate the whole thing into something I can create with bulletin board and mat papers and fairy printouts LOL!

A little look into the past with this one, as I had a beautiful new valentine kit to work with from Saxon. I pulled up photos of Megan and I together over the years and chose ones about a decade apart. Sometimes the photos during the 80s make me want to throw them in a box and forget they existed- what in the world were the fashion people thinking? :P LOL

Recent non-holiday LOs

Sometimes it pays to wait until you find just the right kit to scrap certain pictures with. Native American Indian themed kits that are well done are very rare. Flergs came out with one recently called “Dreamcatcher” based on the Twilight book New Moon character Jacob and his Pacific NW tribe, the Quileute. I knew it would be perfect for scrapping this particular photo from the Colorado Indian Market back in January of this year. I wish I could remember what the name of this dance was; it’s not any of really well known ones such as the fancy, eagle or hoop dances. If any family members know, I’d appreciate them passing along the name of it! This particular dancer is from the American Indian Music and Dance Show with the Ware family from Oklahoma.

Since my mom isn’t going to be here this January, I’ll have to decide whether to go up myself or not. Carissa has expressed an interest in going again even without Grandmama. They also have a show in TX at the end of March, so as we are considering heading down that way during spring break after the first dance competition, maybe attending that one would be a possibility if it isn’t too far out of the way.

Here’s another LO where I was waiting for the right kit to come along. These are from our 2004 vacation to CA and AZ. The little one in these photos is Brenna.

They have some fascinating statues scattered throughout the downtown area of our city. One of them is this big open door with a definitely different perspective that Sarah and I had fun with when we were down at the Pikes Peak Center buying tickets for The Lord of the Dance show back in October.

journaling: There are some neat sculptures decorating the downtown Colorado Springs area. This large door by Christopher Wood is titled “My Surreal World” and stands at the top of small grassy hill near the Pikes Peak Center. Seeing Sarah peeking through the door for me set my imagination going- what if you saw a different world on the other side? October 2, 2009

Brenna’s Toothless!

It finally happened- Brenna lost her first tooth Thursday night. I have heard daily reports on how many teeth her friends had lost since school started. She was convinced this childhood milestone was going to pass her by. Oh the impatience of being only 6 years old LOL Here she is in all of her toothless glory. She has a tiny lisp now that is very cute :)

journaling:  It finally happened- Brenna lost her first tooth! Her right lower incisor was loose for months and she was convinced that it would never come out. Like most things, it just needed a bit of patience. She was eating an apple at the time it finally came out. She had already figured out that the Tooth Fairy isn’t real, but we went ahead and put the tooth in Mama’s toothfairy pillow and played the parts anyway, just for fun. ~September 17, 2009

journaling: It’s been 6 years now, and Brenna is still attached to her Bear blanket. In fact, she now has two that are important bed time companions. She can go without them, but will still often ask me to go find them for her when it is time to turn out the lights. They stay home most of the time as Brenna understands that she lost her first bear on vacation and she doesn’t want to lose them.

Going back in time just a bit to scrap the pictures I had of the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia on our vacation in July 2006.

description: The Franklin Institute is one of our favorite science museums. Exploring the Giant Heart, sky bike, interactive exhibits on the history of electricity, and transportation offer hours of fun and learning. Of course there is an exhibit on Benjamin Franklin's role in many of the inventions that play important roles in our lives today plays.

A Few New Layouts

I finally got these pictures of our stop at Springfield, IL and Lincoln Home National Park during our vacation in 2008.

journaling: We love to work history lessons into the stops of our vacations. Springfield, IL is very proud of the fact that Abraham Lincoln lived, worked and won the presidential election while living there.There are historic markers throughout the city that allow you to get a feel for what life in the city was like during Lincoln’s time.Touring the former Lincoln stomping grounds is a marvelous education into a bit of real American history- the furnishings, kitchen utensils, and toys, the streets that he walked every day on his way to work at the Old State Capital, and the train depot he departed from on his way to the White House.

Journaling: In Springfield, of course we had to stop at the home of President Lincoln. We watched the movie about his life in Springfield before he won the presidency and then we took the tour of his home. It was an interesting look at life in the 1860s. President Lincoln had the foresight and generosity to make his home available to the public. Favorite toys and items are noted throughout the home, including the stereoscope and carved horse that the boys loved. Mary had a love of bold colors and patterns that is reflected throughout the home’s decor.

This week’s layouts

Not much in the way of layouts for the week. I’ve spent the majority of my time working on a new tutorial for SBG and RAKscraps. What started out as one tutorial has turned into a series of 4 tutorials. There was just so much information that I had to break it up. I think it will work better this way- give people smaller chunks to digest and not be so overwhelmed with it all. I’ve still got some formatting and such to do, so I’m not quite done with them yet.

I had to take a break from the tutorial stuff last night and scrap something. I had just been looking at it too long at that point. I had been wanting to record something the twins did last week during lunch one day- they were having a contest seeing who knew more texting/IM abbreviations. One of them would toss out the abbreviation and the other would have to say what it meant, then she could give another for the first girl. They knew more than I expected since neither of them has a cell phone or even an email account at this point. I guess they hear them on TV shows and from other kids, and they even have a shirt that has a few written on it. The shirt must have been a hand-me-down from our friends the Nortons as I didn’t buy it. LOL

journaling: Beth & Carissa don’t have cell phones, or even an email account yet, but texting abbreviations still creep into their everyday conversations.  One afternoon during lunch they were having a contest to see who knew more of them than the other. I think it ended up being a draw. LOL

And the other page I got done last weekend is a flash back to vacation last summer when we spent a few days with MommyPat and Walt. One day we went to visit the Will Rogers Memorial Museum in Claremore. I really enjoyed the couple of hours we spent there. Will Rogers was an incredible man. His insights into life still very much ring true today. We need more men like him in the world!

journaling: MommyPat took us to visit the Will Rogers Memorial Museum in Claremore. It was a very interesting couple of hours learning about this man known as “Oklahoma’s Favorite Son.” He lived the American dream- small town boy grows up to be rich and famous. It is the way that he did this that is inspiring- through hard work, honesty and integrity. Those values stuck with him throughout his career and life, making him one of our country's true heroes.

I enjoyed putting this layout together for Beth- I don't think I will tell her what all of the things are, she will just have to discover them on her own as she reads the books.
journaling: Beth began reading Twilight on June 1 and spent all day absorbed in the book. I have to admit to being glad that someone else in the family finds it as fascinating as I did. I am looking forward to discussing the storyline with her as she makes her way through the series this summer.

journaling: I had heard and read about all of the wrought iron garden gates and balconies before visiting Savannah, and the historic district did not disappoint me. I loved all of the styles from simple to ornate, and peeking through them to catch glimpses of the homes’ gardens and porches.

journaling: The robotics room was one of our favorite exhibits. Everyone young and old enjoyed playing with the robots- drawing and dancing with them, trying to beat them, and learning how they are used in industry to build the things we use every day in a quicker and more efficient manner.
