Snapshot 2012 #24-26

Since the Snapshot posts got a little behind throughout the year, we were on warp speed in December to get them all up before 2012 came to an end. So, here are the last 3 pages to round out my Snapshot  2012 album. I guess I’m going to have to come up with some sort of cover for it now so I can get it printed and out of the virtual world.

Snapshot 24 is about the things you are thankful for right now. I listed a few along with a picture of the family at Thanksgiving this year.

Snapshot2012-24gratitude
journaling: Thanksgiving 2012- I’m so thankful this year for a family who loves me, good health, a place to live, clothes to wear, and enough for the extras that make living fun and special.

Snapshot 25 asks you to write a letter to the future. I chose to write down a few things I want the kids to know. I hope I have made it clear over the years, but it never hurts to put it down in writing too ;)

Snapshot2012-25lettertofutu
journaling: A few things I want my children to know before they grow up and leave our house:
*Believe in yourself and what you can do. Too many things today try to tell us that we can have or do something if only we change ourselves in some way to fit an ideal set by society. We all have worth just the way we are. If someone can’t accept you like you are, then they aren’t worth your time and attention.
*Find the things you enjoy and are good out and then pursue them. It may not always be easy, but you should enjoy what you do and the people who you are around.
*Strength doesn't come from what you can do. It comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn't. — Rikki Rogers.

Snapshot 26 is the final one, and it’s an all about me page to record who this snapshot of the year is about.

Snapshot2012-26whoamI  journaling: Being a Stay At Home Mom wasn’t in my long-term plans when I was growing up. I had planned a career, but once I held my first child in my arms my priorities changed. Right now my days are filled by and revolve around what the kids need and want to do. I get frustrated sometimes at having so little time to myself. It can be quite boring cooking and cleaning and being the family taxi driver.  When I start to think negatively, I remind myself that I chose this, and that I’m privileged to be able to be at home full-time. Above all, I’m happy to be able to be there for my family, even when it is not all roses. I wouldn’t have it otherwise.

Snapshot 2012 #23

Snapshot #23 is about vacations and/or what you do to relax.

Snapshot2012-23relaxation
journaling: The older kids are to the age where they are very busy year-round, and we haven’t taken a formal vacation in several years now. Books are still my favorite escape from everyday life, if only for a few minutes. There’s not much I find more relaxing than spending the day on the couch engrossed in a good story.

Snapshot 2012 #22

Snapshot  #22 is about your  favorite things. I’ve done this sort of page many times before, but it’s a fun one revisit since usually there are some new things mixed in with the old favorites.

Snapshot2012-22favorites
journaling: I love the changing of the seasons from summer to fall
I love the color plum lately
I love pumpkin spice anything - pie, bread, lattes, cookies, etc.
I love seeing my kids learn new things at school
I love hearing the birds chirping in the tree outside my window
I love high school football and listening to the band
I love seeing the hot air balloons on Labor Day weekend

Snapshot 2012 #21

Snapshot  #21 is about current technology and how we use it. I focused on the changes the technology of music has gone through in my lifetime.

Snapshot2012-21technology

Journaling: Music has always played a big part of my life. I remember fondly the first record player I received at Christmas. The Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers, and Disney stories on LP kept me entertained in my room. As I got older the music changed to the Bee Gees, Sean Cassidy and Olivia Newton John. In middle school, boom boxes and cassette tapes became the standard music media. I made a few of my own mix tapes over the years by recording songs from the radio. In college, CDs came out and slowly took over the music market. Now in 2012 it’s mp3 files and instant downloads. I don’t know what will come next, but I’m sure I will go right along with that trend as it happens too because I just have to have music to listen to.

Snapshot 2012 #20

For Snapshot 2012 #20. It’s all about celebrities this time and what you think of them.

Snapshot2012-20celebrities
journaling: Would you like to wish on a star? No, actually I wouldn’t. I’ve never been a huge fan of any particular celebrities. There were never any posters of them on my walls as a kid. That’s not to say that there aren’t music and movie stars whose work I admire and enjoy more than others, but I’ve never felt the need to put them on a pedestal and go crazy over them like some people I knew. Celebrities are after all just people too and like most of us they end up doing something less than stellar eventually. I’ve always enjoyed the art of lots of different entertainers, and I don’t see that ever changing.

Snapshot 2012 - #17

Snapshot 17 is about the heroes and people you admire. Since I scrapped this page during the last few days of the summer Olympics in London, I focused on my feelings about the athletes are participating, and have participated in the past, in the greatest sporting event around the world. I remember watching the games as a kid. I especially loved the equestrian, diving, synchronized swimming and gymnastics events. How they broadcast the games has certainly changed through the years, and I still wish I got to see more of the sports that don’t get as much coverage in the news. One of these days I’ll scrap a page about one of Mark’s  family members who ran the marathon in the 1924 Paris Olympics.

Snapshot2012-17heroes

journaling: I've always watched the Olympics and marveled at the skill that each of the athletes competing at the games displays in their chosen sport. While it is always fun to be able to cheer for the winning team, I also believe that just participating should be treated with as much respect as winning a medal. It takes years of dedication to a single pursuit to be good enough to even qualify to attend and represent the athlete's country in an Olympic year. So, Way To Go!! to all of the athletes that competed at this year's games in London- you did your best and that should be good enough to win anyone's respect and admiration.
A few inspiring athletes that competed for the honor of their country at the 2012 Olympics without expectations of being able to win a medal:
Julie Zetlin from USA in Rhythmic Gymnastics
Sarah Attar from Saudi Arabia in the 800m
Oscar Pistorius from S.Africa in the 400m and 4x400 relay

Snapshot 2012 - #16

Snapshot #16 is about how you use the internet. Where you go, what you do with it. It’s an integral part of our daily lives at our house.

Snapshot2012-16internet
journaling: The internet is something you don’t realize how much you depend on until you don’t have access to it. There is almost always a computer on in the house connected to the web, and usually there is more than one. The internet is used for business and personal email, keeping in touch with friends and family, looking up information of all kinds, and even shopping. It’s an integral part of life.

Snapshot 2012 - #15

Snapshot #15 is about your friends. I’ve done a few pages recently and over the years about the specific people who make up my group of friends, so I chose to focus on how Facebook has changed the way we all connect.

Snapshot2012-15friends
journaling: I’ll admit that I didn’t get Facebook at first. It seemed like just another place that I was going to have to check online every day. Maybe that was because it was the digi-scrapping community that embraced it so easily and much of what was in the forums at the digi-sites was duplicated at Facebook. Things have changed a couple of years later though now that so many people use it. Facebook is the first place I check in the morning after I glance through the email inbox. It’s not just scrappers I know anymore. I’ve connected with family members, high school and college friends, friends from around the world, and favorite businesses. It is the go-to place to find out what everyone is up to and going on, even with people I see in person on a daily basis.

Snapshot 2012 - #13 Family News

Snapshot #13 is about your personal or family news, the things that are going on in your house recently. I think all of us on The Crew who did examples chose the option of scrapping them in front page newspaper style. I have to say it looks kind of cool, but I really don’t like writing in ‘reporter style’ LOL It was a fun stretch anyway ;) (and yes, there are usually stray cereal pieces scattered around our table on any given day :P )

Snapshot 2012 - #12 Comfort Foods

Snapshot #12 is about comfort foods, or holiday foods. I’ve scrapped the traditional holiday recipes we use before, so I went with a general page listing the ones we usually pick from when planning the big holiday meals.

Snapshot2012-12comfortfoods
journaling: If it is a major holiday meal such as Easter, Thanksgiving or Christmas, then usually our traditional favorites will be making an appearance on the table. These are dishes typically made from scratch using old family recipes. We are open to trying out new recipes with the old, and occasionally one of the new ones will make its way onto the permanent list of things we choose from when planning a holiday meal. For example, Potatoes Romanoff is a recipe that Mark and I tried when we were dating and everyone liked it so much that now we usually make it instead of plain mashed potatoes.

Snapshot 2012 - #11

Snapshot # 11 is  about your dreams- old, new, what you are doing to achieve them, or what is keeping you from them.

Snapshot2012-11dreams  journaling: I've been looking for some way to contribute financially to the growing cost of the kids’ activities, and an opportunity to work as a photographer for a friend growing her small business has presented itself. I’m not sure how it will fit in with the needs of my family, especially time-wise, but I think it is an opportunity worth pursuing. Who knows, it may work out better than I hoped and I won’t know if I don’t try.

Snapshot 2012- #10

Snapshot # 10 is all about what sort of things makes you laugh. I went with my family. Someone is always telling a joke, especially the knock-knock kind, making a bad pun, or singing something wrong on purpose. Usually they are so bad you just have to chuckle at least a little.

Snapshot2012-10laugh
journaling: Someone is always telling knock-knock jokes, making funny faces, coming up with bad puns, or singing the words to songs incorrectly (on purpose). Sometimes you just have to laugh right along with them.

Snapshot 2012 - #9

Snapshot #9 is about your health- what things you doing to stay or get healthy. My newest step is taking daily medication to lower my blood pressure, a curse from both sides of my family. I have to say that I am feeling better, if only I remember to take those little pills every day. I went with a doodled chalkboard sort of feel to the page, like something you see at the front of a lot of restaurants telling you what the daily specials are but with some paints and paper elements thrown in for good measure too.

Snapshot2012-09health
.... my blood pressure, that is. In January I finally went to the doctor and got medication to lower my blood pressure. I don’t like the fact that I will have to take it for the rest of my life, but I feel better and that is what really matters.

Snapshot 2012 - #8

Snapshot 2012 #8 is about your clothing style. Not much to say on this one really. Fashion isn’t something I worry too much about right now. For the sake of the project completeness I made myself scrap about it anyway ;)

Snapshot2012-08Style
journaling: It’s a sad fact, but true, that my style definitely leans to the comfortable side of things now. It’s not really important to me that I be wearing the latest fashions. I look at what is in the stores on the occasions that I do go shopping and I just don’t like what is available most of the time. It’s too low cut or too tight in some spot or I don’t like the colors or patterns or it is just generally unflattering or uncomfortable in some fashion. So, I gravitate towards jeans and comfortably loose shirts most days. I spend a lot of time sitting at the computer or in the car or standing in the kitchen and comfort is key in my book. Most of my shirts are some shade of blue, purple or red and the darker tones of those families predominate. For more formal occasions, the ‘little black dress’ makes an appearance from closet. I can’t say that I’m terribly fond of dresses any more- maybe in part because I find heels so uncomfortable now. Maybe I just need to invest in some better shoes? Most days, my purple Converse are just fine for the activities that I need to do.

Snapshot 2012 #7

Snapshot 2012 #7 is about the things you like to read. The kids and I find ourselves reading lots of dystopian book series lately, the most popular of which is The Hunger Games at the moment. We anxiously awaited the release of the  movie and added the soundtrack to our music collection the morning it came out. We’ve found quite a few other series that are just as good.

journaling: It's not new, but it is the latest trend in young adult fiction these days- dystopia. Some catastrophic world disaster has taken place and a new world order has begun. Something's not right though, and it is up to the youth of the day to stand up to the corrupt government and make changes- hopefully for the betterment of everyone. A few have been reading assignments in school to provoke thought and discussion, while others are ones that we have read just for fun. Current loves and favorites- The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins, Divergent Trilogy by Veronica Roth, Tunnels by Roderick Gordon & Brian Williams, and The Maze Runner Trilogy by James Dashner.

Snapshot 2012 #6

Snapshot 2012 #6 is all about the music you listen to.

Snapshot2012-06Music

journaling: I've got almost a week's worth of music on my little iPod Nano, with at least a little of nearly every style of music represented. All of the hours at the dance place have rubbed off on me and my taste for different types of music has expanded over the years. The hours I spend in the van driving the kids around are hours I can try out new groups and see if there is something else I would like to add to my extensive library of music. The cards on this page represent the playlists and styles that get the biggest portion of my listening time.

Snapshot 2012 #5

For SBG Snapshot 2012 #5 – I Get Around

journaling: We bought our 2001 Toyota Sienna before Brenna was born and it gets a workout nearly every day- taking kids to school, shopping, picking kids up from school, going to dance, appointments, clubs and music lessons. Yes, there has been some minor issues with it over the years, but I’m very thankful that we’ve had no major problems with it.
